How the program began
In the Spring of 2002, St. James Mercy was privileged to have Lt. Governor Mary Donohue and the city of Hornell visit our facility to present us with Healthy Women Partnership grant that promotes the education and screening of women for Breast and Cervical Cancer. The Mobile Mammography program is an extension of the Healthy Women Partnership.
In October of 2002, St. James Mercy received a $250,000 grant for the purchase and start up costs associated with a Mobile Mammography program. This was one of only five hospitals in all of NYS that received this award. An additional $75,000 was presented to us from NYSDOH to continue the program until March 2004.
Mobile mammography has proven to be effective at reaching women who live in isolated areas and who are reluctant to travel very far for breast cancer screenings. This Mobile program will allow us to reach out to those individuals in the rural areas of Steuben, Eastern Allegany, and Southern Livingston Counties. We will be bringing quality healthcare to individuals by overcoming some of the barriers that have stopped them from receiving their recommended screenings and will also work to increase the awareness and education of Breast Cancer.
