Temporary Visitor Restrictions
Because of a high level of concern for patient and staff health during the flu season, St. James Mercy Hospital is temporarily restricting visitor access to inpatient units and the emergency room, starting October 21 until further notice. This includes:
- No visitors under 14 are allowed in the hospital unless they are a patient.
- No more than two visitors are allowed at a time in inpatient rooms and in the ER. This does not apply to patients in end-of-life situations.
- Any visitors with fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea should stay home.
- Patients should ask for a mask if they have flu or cold symptoms.
- Visitors and patients should wash their hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
- Visitors and patients should cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or on their upper sleeve.

Note: Out of respect for other patients on the floor, we request the help of our patients and their visitors in maintaining quiet on the unit. Visitors may be asked to leave a patient room by a physician or nurse during examination or other procedures.
Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Please do not leave children under 14 unattended in the hospital lobby. For the health of newborns, we request that only siblings of the baby be allowed to visit a maternity patient's room.

Full meals and snacks are available to visitors in the main cafeteria on the ground floor and also the canteen on the second floor of the hospital and in the cafeteria of McAuley Manor Manor.

About Financial Counseling
In Keeping with the St. James Mercy Health System’s mission and core value of commitment to those who are poor, we provide care for persons who are in need and give special consideration to those who are most vulnerable, including those who are unable to pay and those whose limited means make it extremely difficult to meet the expenses incurred in receiving healthcare.
Financial Counseling is for:
- Uninsured patients
- Underinsured patients
- Patients with special circumstances
- Patients with questions or concerns regarding their statement
When does Financial Counseling Start:
Financial counseling starts at the point of registration. Registrars will ask all uninsured patients if they would like to speak with a Financial Counselor. The Financial Counselors will contact any patients requesting financial counseling within 24 hours. The Financial Counselors are also available for patients to come onsite to review their documents and financial situation.

Financial Counseling Services Include:
- Assistance with Medicaid applications
- Assistance with Charity Care applications
- Assistance with other discount policies for inpatients and high cost services
- Answering questions regarding patient statements
- Patients may be eligible for government programs such as Medicaid or Family
Note: Health Plus and/or Charity Care if the household income is below the Federal Poverty Guidelines as listed below. Partial Charity Care is available for eligible patients with income up to 200% of the Poverty Guidelines.

Traveler Information
Patient Education
Patient Education includes instruction of specific knowledge and/or skills needed to meet the patient's ongoing health care needs including:
- Diagnosis
- Safe and effective use of medication and medical equipment, if any
- Instruction on potential food/drug interaction and counseling on modified diets as appropriate
- When and how to obtain further treatment and education
This instruction will include the patient's family, significant other and/or organization/individual responsible for patients continuing care, when and as appropriate. The family/significant other may be the primary learner. Resources shall be based on the patient's needs and include, but not be restricted to brochures, printed material, group and individual teaching sessions, audio-video tapes and internal or external resources.
Education shall be adapted to age, culture and religious practices, language barriers and be individualized to each patient, and must be offered in a timely, efficient, caring and respectful manner.
Outpatients can receive dietary and diabetic education upon referral by their primary care physician.
Nursing staff are available to assist you in learning more about your care at home. Individualized classes are held with you and your family covering such topics as heart attack, diabetes, ostomies and others. Arrangements can be made by notifying your nurse or social worker or calling Patient Education at 607-324-8139.
